What affects the cost of bathroom tiling
The main factors that move a bathroom tiling quote up or down, so you can compare quotes fairly.
Two bathroom tiling quotes for rooms of the same size can be very different. That is usually because of the factors below, not just the square metres.
1. Area and wall height
Floor area plus the wall area being tiled. Full-height walls can double the tiled area compared with a splash height.
2. Tile size and type
Mosaics, finger tiles and herringbone layouts take longer to lay. Large-format and natural-stone tiles need more preparation and handling. Standard-size ceramic or porcelain tiles are usually the quickest.
3. Layout and cutting
Niches, shelves, mitred corners, feature walls and many penetrations (taps, outlets, wastes) add cutting and set-out time.
4. Surface preparation
Uneven floors or walls may need levelling or screeding. Removing old tiles adds labour and disposal.
5. Materials
Whether the price includes tiles, adhesive, grout, trims and sealers, or labour only on tiles you supply.
6. Access and location
Upstairs bathrooms, apartments with lift bookings and limited parking can add time.
7. Other trades
Wet-area membrane work, plumbing and electrical work are separate trades with their own licensing and costs. Check whether a quote includes them or assumes they are done by others.
Comparing quotes
- Check that every quote covers the same areas and wall heights.
- Confirm who supplies the tiles and materials.
- Ask what surface preparation is included.
- Ask what is excluded.
